The G+ Authorship Process

Google Authorship ResultOK, so we’ve covered what Google Authorship is, and why you should bother with using it. Now let’s discuss how to setup g+ Authorship so you too can benefit from its advantages. Fortunately there’s a few different setup approaches that Google supports. Unfortunately, some of those processes get a little “techy” with needing to know some code. There is good news, however; I will be covering, “How to Set Up G+ Authorship on WordPress” in my next post, for those who are looking for a simple solution for that very popular web platform.

This discussion covers, in a more theoretically way, three methods for setting up Authorship on various website types (those owned by you, those you participate on, and those whom others publish you on, etc.). If you’re code savvy this article should be sufficient to set Authorship up for yourself. If your still fuzzy, my next post will provide you with a practical simple approach in setting up Authorship on WordPress, where you own the domain.

G+ Authorship Steps

STEP 1 – Since Authorship is specifically and directly connected to a Google+ account, you will need to create a g+ profile. Make sure you complete your profile information and upload a good, professional looking, headshot of yourself. If you presently don’t have a g+ account, please visit Google, here: https://accounts.google.com/SignUp

STEP 2 – You will next need to help “link”, or “marry”, your g+ profile with your web authored content so that you get credit. This will allow for your headshot to show up next to your listing result in Google’s SERPs. Google supports three procedures to make this happen.

a.   THE THREE LINK APPROACH

3-link-method

The above diagram is a conceptual view of how to set up your own website, on a domain you own, regardless of platform (html, Jumla, Drupal, WordPress, etc.).

The ‘rel=”author”’ is what is known as a “rich snippet” that needs to be set up in the coding of your content. Please visit Google’s page on Authorship for exact coding. Also, here’s a YouTube video on rel=”author”.

b.   THE TWO LINK METHOD

2-link-method

This diagram represents how you would set up your information for Authorship on a third party site that you did not directly own, such as Blogger, WordPress.com, or membership site.

The above solution requires the same coding content that was noted in first solution, The Three Link Approach. Please visit Google’s page on Authorship for exact coding.

c.   THE EMAIL VERIFICATION SOLUTION

email-verification-method

This last diagram scenario would apply to published articles from various sources, including, local news, article sites, or other online publications that restrict the number of, or prohibit, link(s) within the article or bio, but do permit you to list your email address. Here’s a link to Google’s verification page.

Regardless of where you’ve distributed your content online, if you use one the above solutions, as it applies to your publication scenario, your photo will eventually show next to the search result if, and when, your content gets indexed by Google. Unfortunately, this process sometimes can take several weeks to show results. Consequently, the best advice here is to install it and move on; or simply, “set it, and forget it.”

For immediate verification, however, you can check to see if you’ve set up your Authorship correctly. Visiting Google’s verification page, then enter the url where your article is posted, and hit your return button. If correctly formatted, your image, and associated limited info, should show on the page, underneath the tool.

That’s it for now. Good luck, and keep your eye out for our next post.

What Is Google Authorship?

Google Authorship for WritersGoogle Authorship is currently all the rage among writers, publishers, content developers, and the SEO community. Many folks I know have been hesitant to adopt Google Authorship, fearing it’d be a wasted effort, while others are already seeing amazing results. There’s been speculation over whether Google Authorship is actually influencing search engine results.  I believe it’s started, and that it’ll be a significant factor in the future of SEO.

That said, I apologize if this post seems to be a bit of a compilation of other peoples’ stuff; sometimes citing experts, in their respective fields, lends more credibility to one’s own work. My take is, others have said it much better, so why reinvent the wheel? I did much editing and arranging to help make it my own. So here goes…

What is Google Authorship?  “Google Authorship is a solution Google came up with to connect a piece of content with the Google Plus profile of its author. The modern online landscape is flooded with content, since SEO’s have been screaming, “content is king.”  Google Authorship provides the tools to allow your content to cut through the noise.”  (see:  http://www.trighton.com/what-is-google-authorship/)

What is Google Authorship’s History? In June 2011, Google began to support the existing markup standard HTML5 (rel=”author”) to help search engines identify works by the same author across the Internet. The search engine giant called this “a way to connect authors with their content on the web.”

Google’s Webmaster Central Blog article, Authorship markup and web search, states:“We know that great content comes from great authors, and we’re looking closely at ways this markup could help us highlight authors and rank search results.”

(ref:  http://socialsolutionscollective.com/google-authorship-seo-benefits-that-you-need-to-know/)

Will Google Authorship become the new page rank?  “Reputation will matter more and more as we move forward.  Over time, we (Google) will be caring more about identity and social.  He’s also saying it would be great to see commenter’s on blogs who have authority to get credit for that also.” – Matt Cutts  “Matt is recommending implementing authorship on your site.” (by:  http://www.searchenginejournal.com/matt-cutts-on-whats-needed-for-seo-success-in-2013-and-beyond-live-blogging/60903/)

What does Google, itself, say about Google Authorship?
It’s Good for authors like you:

  • They provide analytics for your content.
  • Distinguish and validate your content in search results.
  • Get more followers on Google+.
  • Help readers discover your other content on the web.

It’s Good for the web:

  • Help users find high quality content on the web.
  • Empower them to engage with content authors through Google+.

(from:  http://www.google.com/insidesearch/features/authorship/index.html)

Is there a benefit to using Google Authorship? “When you do great work, sometimes it’s nice to have your face associated with it. Now, when it comes to writing great blog posts, it’s easy to claim it as your own for the world to see.  …And, according to the Media Shift blog, some blogs have seen a 15-50% increase in traffic based on their photo showing up in search.” (see: http://imagebox.com/blog/industry/what-is-google-authorship/)

Is Google Authorship Important? Let me quote one more source for that answer, “As Google continues to merge its new and former products (This includes migrating business listings on Google Places to Google+), getting setup with Google Authorship should be a top priority for business owners and webmasters.” (view:  http://www.huffingtonpost.com/jayson-demers/the-complete-guide_b_2831249.html)

Not sure what to do with Authorship? Check out my blog post on, “Why Bother With Google Authorship?” As an FYI, this post will soon be followed by two other posts related to this subject, “How Do I Get My Picture To Show With Google Authorship”, and  “How Do I Install Google Authorship On WordPress?”

Why Bother With Google Authorship?

google authorship SERP resultGoogle Plus Is Changing Everything in Search

Authorship helps you stand out in search. People respond to faces, and having your picture, or company logo, show as part of Google’s changing search engine search results pages (SERPs) is both eye catching and helps differentiate your listings from among your competitors. A well composed, professional head shot, or business image, can be very engaging and memorable.

“But none, or few, of my friends use Google Plus! (G+)” That may be true, however, Google now owns about 80% of search, while Yahoo, Bing and the rest are fighting over the remaining 20%. Social Signals are becoming a bigger part of Google’s search engine algorithm deciding what should show, in what order.

Let’s review and consider further the benefits of mastering Google Authorship:

Why Bother With Google Authorship?

  • Gains You Higher Visibility
  • Personalizes Your Listing
  • Promotes Higher Click Through Rates
  • Gets Higher Page Views
  • Expands Your Social Following
  • Improves Search Rankings

Per Matt Cutts, chief engineer over Google’s war on spam said, in an interview concerning “Links vs. Social Signals”, “I don’t doubt that in ten years things will be more social, and that those will be more powerful signals, but I would not write the epitaph for links just right quite yet.” (ref: http://www.seroundtable.com/google-links-social-15396.html) The implications of his statement should be giving us all a “heads up” on how the SERPs will be changing. That, combined with last year’s fall out with Facebook, (see: http://www.digitaltrends.com/social-media/facebook-pr-fallout-googles-social-circle-warrants-another-look/) can lead some to infer that Google might start favoring their own social signals, e.g. Circles, over other social media platforms.

That said, if Google is being unfair, and weighing G+ social signals over Facebook, and other platforms, who’s to cry foul? Google search is “free”; you can always search on other networks. But again, remember Google owns 80% of search. So if you want to show up well in the SERPs, you need to be a player by joining Google Plus, and create your profile(s) accordingly. Mark my words, early adopters of Google Plus, and mastering Google Authorship, will be hugely rewarding.

Where do you stand? If you type in your web address, or blog address, into Google’s rich snippets tool bar (visit: http://www.google.com/webmasters/tools/richsnippets), does your photo show in the result? If not, please stay tuned to my future postings on this subject so you too can benefit this very important social media platform resource.

How I Use SEOmoz for Local Optimization Today

Posted by David Mihm

Hard to believe it’s already been two months since I’ve been a part of the SEOmoz team! We’ve made some great progress on syncing up our codebase with the SEOmoz development environment. Once that process is complete, the fun part REALLY begins, and we will start to build out additional Local functionality over the course of 2013 and beyond. I can’t wait to write Version Two of this post once we’ve got more of that functionality built.

As an SEOmoz PRO customer since the service launched in February 2007, I thought I’d give a quick little tour of how I’ve used SEOmoz’s existing tools for Local optimization in my consulting role at David Mihm, Inc. over the past six years.

Throughout the last 18 months, I’ve been helping my cousin Tracy with her small business Group Insurance PDX, which I'll use as an example for this post.

Keyword Difficulty Tool

My Goals:

  • Determine how realistic it is for an SMB site to rank
  • Assess optimization efforts to-date
  • Identify SMB competition
  • Identify large, fixed objects for “Barnacle SEO

Process:

  1. Launch the Keyword Difficulty Tool
  2. Enter the keywords you want to analyze
  3. View report for each keyword
  4. Pay attention to Domain Authority
  5. (Optional) Analyze backlink profiles of SMB Competitors using OpenSiteExplorer

Comments:

The keyword difficulty tool makes competitive research more efficient. Simply run a handful of these reports and, at a glance, you get a sense for who the major players are in your competitive space, and just how dominant they are. I like to pay particular attention to domain authority (rather than page authority) in Local because many small business websites have very few pages, and Google tends to display the homepage for many more terms than you’d typically see in an e-commerce or more national B-to-B space.

As you analyze the list of sites returned for your keywords, keep your eyes peeled for “Barnacle SEO” opportunities — large, high-authority sites that you might be at a disadvantage to outrank on your own, but offer the opportunity for comments, business listings, or traditional web directory listings. Getting cited or linked to from these bigger guys will give your own site a leg up, and you may be able to get a secondary clickthrough if searchers actually end up on those pages. If it’s your own profile that ranks on those larger players, you may end up with two results on the main SERP.

For the smaller players, check out their backlinks using OpenSiteExplorer simply by clicking the magnifying glass next to their website.

In Tracy’s case, I’m pretty pleased that a relatively young site is competing so favorably in organic SERPs for a lot of her top keywords. The keyword difficulty tool helped identify four of her Local competitors, one IYP where she should consider getting a listing (Dex Knows), and a couple of sites (OregonLive and Examiner) that at the very least she could comment on, and could yield some promising social media relationships.

Clicking through to the Examiner story in particular, the author writes frequently about topics right in Tracy’s wheelhouse, and includes a pretty extensive bio and a prominent Twitter handle. Her following count exceeds her follower count by a 5:1 ratio, which means she’s probably pretty excited about gaining new contacts in social media. This would be a great person for Tracy to get to know.

OpenSiteExplorer

My Goals:

  • Identify authoritative local (“Location Prominent”) inbound link and citation sources
  • Identify low-hanging inbound link opportunities
  • Identify active social networking prospects

Process:

  1. Enter site to search in URL box (or click magnifying glass next to site in Keyword Difficulty tool)
  2. Add additional competitors for a high-level overview
  3. Choose all links, only external, to pages on this root domain
  4. Sort links returned by Domain Authority for SMB competitors
  5. Pay attention to high-Domain-Authority links
  6. Run an Advanced Report for geographic anchor text on SMB competitors
  7. Run an Advanced Report for product/service anchor text on high-Domain-Authority competitors
  8. Save links that look promising as potential guest blog, content outreach, or local sponsorship opportunities

Comments:

The OpenSiteExplorer index has never really taken a deep enough dive on traditional citation sources (i.e., Internet Yellow Pages sites), and that’s one thing I’ll be working with the SEOmoz Engineering team on this year. However, it does do an excellent job of surfacing high-value inbound links.

Obviously, every business wants high-value/high-authority inbound links. But they’re particularly important in Local, where one of Google’s many patents regarding PlaceRank references “the highest score of documents referring to a business.”  In other words, one extremely high-quality, locally-relevant link or citation can be a difference maker in Local rankings, especially in competitive markets.

As I said above in the Keyword Difficulty section, in Local, Domain Authority tends to exceed Page Authority as a ranking consideration. Because of this, my ears prick up whenever I see a high-ranking small business with one or more of these incoming links. In Tracy’s case, several of her competitors had links from high Domain Authority sources: OregonLive.com (the website of the main newspaper in Portland), the Building Industry Association of Clark County, and two smaller local newspapers (one as a sponsorship, one covering a local neighborhood association meeting).

This exercise yields several link building ideas:

  • Establishing a relationship with the OregonLive reporter (more on this in Followerwonk section)
  • Creating a dedicated page on her own website for each of her clients, that they can send their employees to for healthcare information
  • Sponsoring key local events covered by newspapers
  • Inviting newspaper reporters and other local bloggers to key meetings for each of the three groups on which she serves on the Board

Followerwonk

My Goals:

  • Start REAL, offline relationships via Twitter
  • Identify high-influence social networking prospects
  • Identify Twitter users likely to participate in a conversation
  • Identify additional marketing/link building opportunities

Process:

  1. Identify a core group of three popular Twitter accounts to follow.  These can be distributors, brands, or manufacturers whose products you sell, competitors, popular neighborhood businesses, etc.
  2. Visit the Compare Users tab of Followerwonk
  3. See who follows all three accounts
  4. Sort them by influence score
  5. Reverse-sort them by number of followers
  6. Start following them
  7. Read their Tweets to understand what makes them tick
  8. Reach out to them with great content!

Comments:

As you can probably tell from her Tweet stream, Tracy’s like most small business owners. She doesn’t immediately understand Twitter, and unlike those of us who do Internet marketing for a living full-time, she doesn’t have time to monitor her contacts’ streams 24×7 or send out a lot of Tweets herself. She needs a core group of folks to follow and some crib notes of how to interact with them in a way that will lead to some downstream benefit online. It's important for her to figure out who is most likely to:

  • Start up a conversation
  • Retweet her content
  • Lead to additional marketing opportunities like guest columns or interview requests

Tracy is a major extrovert and very active in traditional business groups, including her local Rotary club, local neighborhood association, and local business association. In her case,  the goal is just to translate her offline comfort with networking into the Twittersphere.

In this case, I’m looking for people interested in her space, so I chose to compare three of the insurance carriers she represents. Folks who follow all three of them are probably pretty interested in health care for small business owners! I then looked at accounts that were high-authority, but very few followers, to identify those who would most likely pay attention if Tracy were to start up a conversation with them.

Among the group that Followerwonk helped me identify were the healthcare reporter for the Oregonian (whose Twitter bio says “tips welcome”) and Cover Oregon, the statewide health exchange launching later this year (but only has 124 Twitter followers so far). Pretty awesome opportunities to start some productive relationships, wouldn’t you say?

Well, that’s my real-life example. I am sure that among our 18,000+ PRO subscribers, many of you are more actively involved in Local Search at a tactical level and have great input on how you use our tools. I’d love to hear about some of them in the comments! And if you have ideas for features you’d like to see in our forthcoming Local products, please pass them along here. Thanks for reading!

To Make Your Local Business Flourish, Excel In SEO

Your Local Business Can Flourish on the Web

If you are an experienced local business, your most likely already of how important search engine ranking is. Websites that are ranked on top tend to be more successful businesses. The following commentary will give you a variety of suggestions on how to get your website ranked better so you can reach your target audience more easily.

To start, educate yourself about optimizing sites for Google, Yahoo & Bing. SEO results are not determined by humans, but by computers. Search engine spiders are used to analyze websites and recognize signs of relevance. You can take advantage of this system by optimizing your website. If you wish to please the search engine crawlers, think about creating a new webpage, or blog post, and make them keyword rich. Also pepper them with links to related authoritative sites.

TIP! One thing you should keep in mind about search engine optimization is to always work on it on a daily basis. SEO is always changing on a constant basis.

Improving your search engine ranking takes time. You need to put some effort into looking into ways on how to achieve good search engine optimization. This could include improving the design and coding for your site. Use your chosen keywords liberally throughout your site with a focus on including them in titles and headings.

Shortcuts To SEO Can Get You De-Listed

There are no shortcuts, you cannot purchase search rankings. These rankings must be built over time through your optimization efforts. You can buy featured spots for a link though. A featured link is typically listed within the top three results on a search results page; these links are usually highlighted as “featured” or “sponsored.” Unfortunately, obtaining sponsored links can be very expensive and most likely out reach for most micro business owners.

Remember, incorporating keywords is not the only way to search engine optimize your website. External links pointing to your site are a huge boost to your site. All links have a benefit; links to other pages, pages linking to yours and links in between all your personal pages. To get off-site links, swapping is not recommended. Google views that as gaming their algorithm, and you’ll get dinged.

TIP! Treating your SEO efforts like homework is a great way to achieve in the highly competitive field of web business. This means you should be approaching the trafficking of your site like the completion of a term paper.

It is always important to pinpoint a new customer’s interest whenever they visit your site. The occasional random site visitor is not likely to actually make a purchase. Target people who already have an interest in buying your product or service before they get to your site. One way to get your message in front of prospective customers is to place advertisements on sites they already visit.

An Online Sales Force Will Help Your Business

Every business should have an online presence. You must have a successful Internet site if your company is dependent upon Internet clients and sales. Hopefully this article will help you get a handle on the finer art of search engine optimization.

Link Building for Your Business – The Benefits of Link Building

Article by Your SEO Manager

If you have an internet marketing company handling your search engine optimization tasks, it’s important that you choose a company that uses link building. This should be a part of any SEO campaign. You probably already know that the use of link building can help to build up your website rankings in the search engines. However, you may not realize that the act of building links can go a lot further than simply raising rankings with search engines. Here is a closer look at just a few of the benefits that can come with building links. With these benefits, you will quickly see why this process is so important to your company.

Build Relationships

One of the main benefits of link building happens to be the ability to build relationships. Many people think of spammy link building, which is not the best way to build links. When you build good links, you will be reaching out to people in a way that is meaningful. Good link building is based on legitimate promotion and building networks. When done this way, getting links will help you develop good relationships that will bring about benefits that are long term. In fact, as you build relationships while building links, you can nurture relationships that may help you promote your business in the future.

Develop a Good Reputation

Managing your online reputation is important and it’s a crucial part of internet marketing. A good internet marketing company should be using link building to help you develop a good reputation on the web. Your reputation online is built of everything that is found on the web that relates to your business, website, or you specifically. Building links that get your brand name out there helps you to create new information about your business online, helping to improve your online reputation. Even if you have negative or unrelated mentions of your business on the web, link building can help to build new mentions that will rank high on search engines, helping to give you a better overall reputation online.

Bring in More Traffic

Last, you will find that link building also has the benefit of helping you to bring up more traffic. While you probably think of links as a way to improve search engine rankings, which will bring more traffic, you may forget that more traffic can be brought to your sites by those links on their own. Links help to bring visitors right to your website as long as you have good links out there. For example, links on review sites or links attached to blog comments may not increase your rankings in the search engines. However, they may bring more.

How Search Engine Optimization Can Give Your Business A Boost

Boost Your Business With SEOGot Business Boost?

It is well known among internet webmasters that a good search engine ranking is essential. Your site will see more traffic if it has a higher search engine ranking. Read below for a few suggestions on ways to optimize your site for improved rankings.

Knowing the rules of the road in SEO will take you to the next level in optimizing your site. With search engines, computers use algorithms and equations to rank your site. Designing your site to ensure it is ranked highly in automatic evaluations is the core principal of search engine optimization.

TIP! Writing for the internet is much different that writing for business or in a scholarly setting. Learn about SEO so that you can write your articles to get picked up by the search engines and you will find that you will get more hits and gain more readers.

There are a variety of factors that help decide where major search engines rank your website. Keywords that are on your site help search engines rank your website. You are also ranked based on the activity on your website and the links to and from your site.

It is necessary to stay patient and put in effort for SEO work. Your visitors’ interests and convenience should be your first priority in designing your website. If you have many keywords, it will be more beneficial. Search engines rank your site based on the use of keywords. You will increase your ranking by using relevant keywords frequently and effectively. A word of caution, limit your keywords to just a few per page or article, and theme those pages for focus, and relevance. Write for your audience, not for the search engine.

Sponsored or featured listings, which normally appear on the top or the sides of search engine result pages, are paid locations that are usually occupied by major corporations with the finances to afford them. If you are a newer small local business, it can help to advertise with Adwords, but in the long run, it’s more cost effective and rewarding to show high in the organic search results.

Blog To Boost Business

TIP! Many companies offer search engine optimization services but in order to find the one that is right for your business, you have to do some research. Contact the company and ask them questions about their experience, the strategies they employ and the risks that are involved.

There is more to search engine optimization than making sure your content features appropriate phrases and keywords. If you add more links within your pages, as well as links to other websites, your site will be ranked higher. A great way to obtain links is by being active in Social Media Sites and in local forums that allow you to post links. Bottom line, “Content is King”; you need to blog to create content targeted to your clients.

Targeted traffic (folks landing on your site) represents the category of people who are your best prospects, and who are genuinely interested in your products, or who have been previous customers.  This means they are much more likely to actually buy something because they are interested in what you’re selling. You can increase target visits by using relevant keywords, using targeted keyword research, which will give great quality results. If advertising, or internet marketing, it is a good idea to promote on websites that your intended audience regularly visits.

Regardless of the business type, an SEO optimized website is necessary. If your business relies on internet sales, you need a great website to front your product. Using this guide, is only the beginning for you to optimize your site for maximum traffic and increased profit potential.
